This volume is based on the findings of the research project Media Culture Transformation hosted by the Orient-Institut Beirut and sponsored by the German Federal Ministry of Education and Research. The project's central aim was to scrutinize how social movements use social media to justify their claims and arguments about the Egyptian constitution during the transitional period of 2011 to 2013. On a theoretical level, this issue addresses the public sphere in a non-democratic Arab context, and thus contributes to media and communication studies.
