Zur Veröffentlichung kommen hier die Vorlesungen zur Verfassungs- und Verwaltungsgeschichte Italiens im Mittelalter und in der Frühen Neuzeit, die Otto Hintze zwischen dem Ende des 19. Jahrhunderts und 1920 hielt. Sie gehören zu den vorbereitenden Materialien für eine von dem deutschen Historiker beabsichtigte "Allgemeine Verfassungs- und Verwaltungsgeschichte der Neueren Staaten", die allerdings unvollendet blieb. Innovativ daran waren der komparative Ansatz, mit dem Hintze die Verfassungen aus verschiedenen Regionen und Epochen untersuchte, um eine Typologie der Institutionen zu erstellen, sowie eine Analyse der Behörden in ihrer historischen Entwicklung und mit Blick auf die Veränderungen ihrer Aufgaben und Strukturen.

In this book, the lectures on the constitutional and administrative history of Italy from the Middle Ages to the Modern Age given by German historian Otto Hintze from the final years of the 19th century up until 1920 have been published. The texts formed part of the preparatory material for the "Allgemeine Verfassungs- und Verwaltungsgeschichte der Neueren Staaten" that the author had intended to publish, but which remained incomplete. Innovative elements to be mentioned include Hintze's comparative method, in which orders and systems in different territories and eras are considered in order to outline a "typology" of institutions, and an analysis of the their historical development, focusing on changes in terms of functions and structures.

Si pubblicano le lezioni di storia costituzionale e amministrativa sull'Italia tra medioevo ed età moderna che lo storico tedesco Otto Hintze tenne tra gli ultimi anni del XIX secolo e il 1920. Questi testi costituivano una parte del materiale preparatorio per l'"Allgemeine Verfassungs- und Verwaltungsgeschichte der Neueren Staaten" che l'autore intendeva pubblicare ma rimase incompiuta. Tra gli elementi di novità occorre ricordare: il metodo comparativo di Hintze, con cui sono presi in esame ordinamenti in territori ed epoche diverse per delineare una tipologia delle istituzioni; l'analisi degli uffici nel loro divenire storico con un'attenzione ai cambiamenti delle funzioni e strutture.
