Das Lustspiel »Die Aristokraten in Deutschland« : Theatrale Auseinandersetzung mit den Auswirkungen der Französischen Revolution im Linksrheinischen

In the wake of the French Revolution of 1789, a wide range of revolutionary literature emerged in the Holy Roman Empire, which referred to the events in France and their effects on neighbouring countries in various text genres and forms, sometimes informative and sometimes with politically provocative intent. The comedy Die Aristokraten in Deutschland (The Aristocrats in Germany), first published in Strasbourg in 1792 and then in Mainz and Koblenz in 1796 by an anonymous author, should, therefore, be looked at in its historical context. In a pithy and humorous manner the play caricatures aristocratic emigrants who fled to neighbouring Germany in the wake of the French Revolution. Viewers and readers were to be convinced of the benefits of the French Revolution through the portrayal of the arrogant emigrés, in order to be won over to a political change on the left bank of the Rhine. By using a contrasting scene structure, as well as emotional speeches and stereotypical character-design, the author created a convenient propaganda tool. Better light can, therefore, be shed on the reaction to the upheavals of the period by the supporters of the Revolution on the west side of the Rhine, and on the diversity of their handling of it, through a stronger entanglement of historical and literary questioning.

Suite à la Révolution française de 1789 une littérature révolutionnaire très diversifiée voit le jour dans le Saint Empire Romain Germanique. Dans de différents genres de textes et sous différentes formes, cette littérature se réfèrent aux événements en France ainsi qu’aux répercussions sur les pays voisins de manière parfois informative et parfois agitatrice. C’est dans ce contexte-là qu’il faut considérer la comédie Die Aristokraten in Deutschland (Les Aristocrates en Allemagne), publiée pour la première fois en 1792 à Strasbourg et puis en 1796 à Mayence et Coblence par un auteur anonyme. Cette pièce caricature de manière humoristique et frappante les émigrés nobles qui ont fui vers l’Allemagne voisine dans le sillage de la Révolution française. Les spectateurs et spectatrices, les lecteurs et lectrices devaient être convaincus des avantages de la Révolution Française par la représentation de ces émigrés prétentieux afin de les rallier à un changement de politique du côté de la rive gauche du Rhin. Au moyen d’une construction contrastée des scènes ainsi que d’un discours pathétique et d’une conception stéréotypée des personnages, l'auteur créât un outil de propagande approprié. La diversité de l’approche et de la réaction suite aux bouleversements de la période française par les partisans de la Révolution sur la rive gauche du Rhin peut donc être mieux mise en évidence par une meilleure imbrication des questions historiques et littéraires.
