Zwischen dem 11. und 12. Jahrhundert kam es in Europa zu einer Beschleunigung tiefgreifender Veränderungen, sodass ein Teil der Geschichtsforschung von einer ersten Revolution spricht. Der komparativ ausgerichtete Band untersucht anhand regionaler Fallstudien das Spezifikum deutscher und italienischer Gebiete und beleuchtet dabei insbesondere den Zusammenhang zwischen dem Investiturstreit und den Wandlungen in politischer und medialer Kommunikation, der Ausübung von Herrschaft sowie den sozialen Beziehungsstrukturen.

Europe went through a period of rapid and profound transformation in the eleventh and twelfth centuries, leading some historians to refer to this time as a first revolution. This comparative volume draws on regional case studies to explore specific developments in German and Italian regions, with a particular focus on interconnections between the Investiture Contest and changes in political and media communication, how power was exercised, and the structures of social relationships.

Tra l’XI e il XII secolo, si realizzò in Europa un’accelerazione dei processi di trasformazione in atto, sicché una parte della ricerca ha parlato di una prima rivoluzione. Il presente volume di taglio comparativo si avvale di casi di studio regionali per esplorare gli sviluppi specifici delle regioni tedesche e italiane, con un’attenzione particolare al nesso tra la lotta per le investiture e i cambiamenti a livello di comunicazione politica e mediatica, esercizio del potere e strutture delle reti relazionali.
